It’s raining in Guatemala and soon we’ll have no shelter
The skies are crying tonight after an hour-long apagado in Guatemala City. There is something calming and quite comforting about the rains as they clean all the muck and grime from the day’s wear. The desolation of the usually empty streets of downtown Zona 1 seems almost appropriate. Sometimes I am reminded of Macondo and its antediluvian waters, but today it’s more like a warning that the hike to Mirador will be laden with mud and already I start to worry about the gear. I start to understand the immensity of the task before us and how can only take it one step at a time. Even if it’s one mudslide after the other.
